Pure Skin: Organic Beauty Basics

Barbara Close, author and founder of Naturopathica, has written an amazing book in holistic spa treatments. Her wealth of knowledge is extensive, she has been a consultant on botanicals for Procter & Gamble and Limited Brands. This book doesn't give you simplistic remedies, but goes in depth to personalized skin regimens and foods that detox and nourish the skin. She also provides a detailed work on homeopathic cures and Bach flower remedies to treat acne, eczema, rosacea, and other skin problems. I highly recommend this book!

Vert the Eco-chic beauty boutique

Last weekend I was visiting a friend who lives in Venice, when I stumbled across Vert! Vert is the Meca of natural cosmetics. Owner Renata Helfman, at a early age had a passion for all things beautiful and natural, so she decided to become a makeup artist.

The concept of Vert started when Renata's doctor asked her to change all her personal and home care products to those without chemicals. She found that being sustainable no longer meant having to sacrifice luxury and sophistication. Not having a one-stop source for eco-friendly cosmetics, Renata realized why not open one. Being a celebrity makeup artist the store quickly gained buzz among the media. Coming into Vert is a destination where you can learn about your skin, makeup, and green living.

Mystra Eau de Toilette

Another of my favorite natural fragrances is by an Australian based company. Aesop is a botanically based skin, hair and body products for men and women. Their fragrances are very nice and last for a long time because they don't contain any alcohol. My favorite is Mystra Eau de Toilette, with notes of mastic, frankincense, and labdanum. The scent is oriental but light, you wont smell like a patchouli wearing hippie. I highly recommend this product especially for people that have asthma.

Solutions for Stressed skin from skyn ICELAND

Don't lose touch... Maintaining your ties with close friends and family, even if it seems like the last thing you can fit into your life, has been shown to alleviate stress. Strong emotional support is one of the best stress antidotes around.

Don't be a drama queen... Give yourself a little talking to when that voice in your head gets a little shrill and hysterical. Not every problem is a catastrophe. Think ahead a few days, weeks or months and ask yourself how much today's dilemma will matter then. Maintain a sense of humor.

Clean up!... Clutter and mess can load on the stress incrementally. Tidy up your desk, throw out those old magazines you've been keeping, give away the clothes you don't wear, streamline your life. Making lists of things you need to take care of rather than carrying it all in your head will help ease the pain too.

Let off a little steam... Don't overload on anxiety. Write down all the little things that are adding up to your huge, palpitating panic attack and then rip up the paper. Sometimes just identifying all the small stuff helps alleviate the pressure.

Schedule yourself a break...You have to plan for free time, as counter-intuitive as that may sound in an already overscheduled world. But if you don't write it in your date book just as you would a meeting or a doctor's appointment, you'll never take the time you need.

Breathe... Okay, we know that sounds obvious, but there's really something to it. When you breathe slowly and deeply, the flow of oxygen into your blood is maximized and the result is a heightened sense of calm.

Feed your senses... The colors, sounds and scents you surround yourself with can make or break you. Pastels can have a calming effect and blues and greens promote relaxation. As for music, inside you may be having a Maalox and Metallica moment, but if you listen to soothing classical music like Mozart, you'll definitely feel better faster. And light a candle or spray a little fragrance. Lavender, orange and sandalwood have been shown to take the edge off stress.

Just a little exercise... You know, you know. You should be getting to the gym more often. But trust us, a little goes a long way. Don't be overly ambitious. Three hours a week of moderate activity like yoga or running does a lot for you. And if that seems like too much to ask, even just one hour of exercise a week has been shown to work wonders as well.

Put down those doughnuts!... Keeping your blood sugar balanced will really help you steel yourself against the detrimental effects of stress. Eating balanced meals that include a good dose of protein from chicken, fish or red meat will increase energy and lower anxiety.

Credible Sources

I was contacted by Brooke Stull of Limited Brands, regrading a current blog entry on animal testing. She informed me that Limited Brands does not test on animals any of their personal care products, nor does it request any of their third party manufacturers to do so. Also, Limited Brand does not use any animal byproducts in their formulations.

When writing your blog entries make sure your sources are valid and up to date. Just because they are on a magazine or on a website does not automatically make them useful for a paper or project. Always check for the authors credentials and where did the author get the information. These tips will be helpful when writing future blog entries.

I re-iterate my apology to Limited Brands.

the ANTIDOTE Quenching Daily Lotion

Recently my skin has been getting irritated from the environment and not enough sleep. Skyn Iceland's Quenching Daily Lotion with Biospheric Complex is the perfect solution for irritable and dull looking skin. Stress and not getting enough sleep can throw your body out of balance. These signs become visible on the skin by the increased levels of oil production, the skin will also start getting itchy, inflamed, and prone to breakouts. This product will transform your skin by detoxifying and stabilizing, bringing it back to its natural fresh and healthy state. What I also like about this product is that is very lightweight and hydrates the skin fast. Its Biospheric Complex is formulated with chaparral extract and meadow sweet extract, to help improve the skin's texture and oiliness.

Companies that do Animal Testing

Photobucket
One of the reasons I decided to be in the beauty industry is to advocate against animal testing. Not many people are aware of the atrocity and constant pain animals have to endure to determine the safety of a cosmetic. Everyday, products are tested on rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, dogs, and other animals to determine if any of these products help prevent or treat human illness. Mascara is brushed around the eyes of rabbits to ensure if a new ingredient is safe and will not cause any allergic reactions. Cover Girl sews the eyes of rabbits open pouring petroleum distillates and causing blindness to the rabbits. Companies like P&G shave the skin of mice to determine varying pH levels. So on your next cosmetic purchase make sure the product you are buying is cruelty-free!

Green Packaging

Today, with the leading trend in sustainability cosmetic companies are opting to go green. As consumers are becoming more aware of their product choices, they are deciding to purchase products that are not only better for themselves, but also for the environment. The target market for this trend is the consumer who is focused on health and fitness, the environment, self-help, sustainable living, and fair trade.
Cognis is one of the leading global manufactures of cosmetics and raw materials; and also has a high degree of concern with providing products that are both ecological and superior in technology. Jeff Falk, senior editor of GCI magazine, interviewed the CEO of Cognis regarding the principles of sustainability in the beauty industry. Petersen said consumers are increasingly becoming more aware of the need for a balance between the mind, body and soul, combined with ecological and social responsibility. He also mentions that this has given the rise to two long-term trends, wellness and spa. Petersen also sees his company’s activities of principles of sustainability having ramifications. By 2012 Cognis plans to cut back 25 percent of environmental impact.

Wal-Mart announced plans to develop a world wide sustainable product index. Mike Duke, Wal-Mart’s president and CEO, says there’s a growing trend of consumers wanting to know the entire life cycle of products, and if the materials used for the product are safe. Wal-Mart will survey 100,000 suppliers around the world to evaluate Wal-Mart’s own sustainability.
Imogen Matthews, writer for GCI magazine interviewed Carrie Mellage director of personal care products for the company Kline; she reaffirms that there is a growing trend in ethical practices and sustainability. She also mentions that, “natural brands are considered to be more trustworthy and do not harm the skin.” Understanding trends is highly important in the beauty industry because it gives you a scope of upcoming trends and long-term trends. It also tells trend analysts what consumers are looking for product wise.

Guerlain Super Aqua-Mask

As you know, I'm obsessed with products that hydrate the skin. I used to use the Guerlain Super Aqua-Serum, but now I find more convenient using the Aqua-Mask sheets. They are very easy to apply and perfectly contour to one's face. Six of the sheets equals to the 1 oz. bottle size. Within 10 minutes, the hydric mattress expands leaving the skin fully hydrated, supple, and eliminating all signs of fatigue . Guerlain's Super Aqua-Mask works by extracting desert rose flower essence, which provides intense hydration in a arid environment. I really recommend this product especially to oily and combination skin types. It's very lightweight and doesn't cause breakouts.

Reiki a holistic therapy used in most spas today. Reiki originated in ancient Tibet as system to promote healing, harmonized and balance energy, and also give an overall feeling of well-being. One of the translations of Reiki is "universal life energy". When receiving Reiki the practitioner will place his hands wherever there is the need for healing. Reiki also helps to heal the body and the mind. It helps the body return to its own perfection, whatever that might be, by healing the cause and eliminating the effect. It is deeply relaxing.

Desert Essence Throroughly Face Wash

Desert Essence face wash is my favorite facial cleanser, I been using it for 6 years and works really great in removing facial sebum. This facial cleanser is very gentel and has all natural oils. Its main ingredient is tea tree oil, which is a natural antiseptic. Tea tree oil can be a better alternative to the use than benzoyl peroxide which is known to cause melatonic tumors in the skin. It also contains Hawaiian white ginger (awapuhi) and the essential oil of chamomile which sooths the skin. Another ingredient is lavender, lavender is good for the skin, soothing and calming, and has extraordinarily healing benefits for burns and blemishes.

Tesla High Frequency Machine

Have you ever heard of the high frequency facial machine? The high frequency machine was developed 1800's by a recognized scientist Nikola Tesla. This machine works by producing heat and is also characterized by a high rate of oscillation. Before the invention of modern antibiotics it was most commonly used for medical purposes such treating a sore throat and other infections. A French biophysicist by name of D'Arsonval started using the high frequency machine to treat skin diseases and the mucous membranes. In the 1970's, spas around Europe began using the high frequency machine for cosmetic and healing benefits. Now, it has become an essential tool in the beauty industry. The benefits of a high frequency facial treatment are plenty: it prevents acne, reduces enlarged pores, decongest puffy eyes, promotes circulation, exfoliates dead skin cells, drains toxins, and treats cellulite. Avoid using the high frequency when using AHA or Glycolic Acid products, and cannot be use to treat broken capillaries and rosacea. A high frequency facial treatment can run up to $150 for 75 minutes. Make sure on your next be visit to the esthetician to ask about the high frequency facial treatment!
