Chivas Skin Care

Recently, Lauren Johanson came to our class to share her experience of being an entrepreneur. She's the co-founder of Chivas Skin Care, an organic handmade soap company. All of the products are made from fresh French Alpine goat milk, that highly moisturizes the skin. The brand is a benchmark to live up to for other companies; products are free of chemical preservatives, artificial colorants or mineral oils. She explained how goat milk has all the vital nutrients for our skin and triglycerides, and how goat's milk closely matches human pH level.

I got to try the Spearmint Goat Milk Soap. Amazing product! Lathers really good, for being a natural soap it foams a lot. My skin felt moisturized, I didn't have to put lotion on.

Ingredients: goat milk, palm oil, coconut oil, olive oil, soybean oil, sodium hydroxide, shea butter, spearmint essential oil, rosemary essential oil, eucalyptus essential oil, lavender essential oil, dried spearmint, rosemary extract.

Homemade Skincare: Lemon Refreshner Astringent

Lemon Refresher
6 drops of lemon essential oil
½ cup witch hazel
Combine ingredients in a storage container and shake well to blend. Use within 1-2 weeks.
Apply: using a cotton pad, apply approximately 1 tsp. to the face, neck, shoulders, as needed. Avoid eye area.

The Lemon Refresher Astringent felt very cooling and light. Although it contained oil, it helped balance out the oil on my face. It made the pores on my skin smaller from a couple of uses. Also, I used it during the day to help refresh my skin. The astringent wasn’t as irritating compared to others; it also helped improved the areas where I have eczema

Pure Skin: Organic Beauty Basics

Barbara Close, author and founder of Naturopathica, has written an amazing book in holistic spa treatments. Her wealth of knowledge is extensive, she has been a consultant on botanicals for Procter & Gamble and Limited Brands. This book doesn't give you simplistic remedies, but goes in depth to personalized skin regimens and foods that detox and nourish the skin. She also provides a detailed work on homeopathic cures and Bach flower remedies to treat acne, eczema, rosacea, and other skin problems. I highly recommend this book!

Vert the Eco-chic beauty boutique

Last weekend I was visiting a friend who lives in Venice, when I stumbled across Vert! Vert is the Meca of natural cosmetics. Owner Renata Helfman, at a early age had a passion for all things beautiful and natural, so she decided to become a makeup artist.

The concept of Vert started when Renata's doctor asked her to change all her personal and home care products to those without chemicals. She found that being sustainable no longer meant having to sacrifice luxury and sophistication. Not having a one-stop source for eco-friendly cosmetics, Renata realized why not open one. Being a celebrity makeup artist the store quickly gained buzz among the media. Coming into Vert is a destination where you can learn about your skin, makeup, and green living.

Mystra Eau de Toilette

Another of my favorite natural fragrances is by an Australian based company. Aesop is a botanically based skin, hair and body products for men and women. Their fragrances are very nice and last for a long time because they don't contain any alcohol. My favorite is Mystra Eau de Toilette, with notes of mastic, frankincense, and labdanum. The scent is oriental but light, you wont smell like a patchouli wearing hippie. I highly recommend this product especially for people that have asthma.

Solutions for Stressed skin from skyn ICELAND

Don't lose touch... Maintaining your ties with close friends and family, even if it seems like the last thing you can fit into your life, has been shown to alleviate stress. Strong emotional support is one of the best stress antidotes around.

Don't be a drama queen... Give yourself a little talking to when that voice in your head gets a little shrill and hysterical. Not every problem is a catastrophe. Think ahead a few days, weeks or months and ask yourself how much today's dilemma will matter then. Maintain a sense of humor.

Clean up!... Clutter and mess can load on the stress incrementally. Tidy up your desk, throw out those old magazines you've been keeping, give away the clothes you don't wear, streamline your life. Making lists of things you need to take care of rather than carrying it all in your head will help ease the pain too.

Let off a little steam... Don't overload on anxiety. Write down all the little things that are adding up to your huge, palpitating panic attack and then rip up the paper. Sometimes just identifying all the small stuff helps alleviate the pressure.

Schedule yourself a break...You have to plan for free time, as counter-intuitive as that may sound in an already overscheduled world. But if you don't write it in your date book just as you would a meeting or a doctor's appointment, you'll never take the time you need.

Breathe... Okay, we know that sounds obvious, but there's really something to it. When you breathe slowly and deeply, the flow of oxygen into your blood is maximized and the result is a heightened sense of calm.

Feed your senses... The colors, sounds and scents you surround yourself with can make or break you. Pastels can have a calming effect and blues and greens promote relaxation. As for music, inside you may be having a Maalox and Metallica moment, but if you listen to soothing classical music like Mozart, you'll definitely feel better faster. And light a candle or spray a little fragrance. Lavender, orange and sandalwood have been shown to take the edge off stress.

Just a little exercise... You know, you know. You should be getting to the gym more often. But trust us, a little goes a long way. Don't be overly ambitious. Three hours a week of moderate activity like yoga or running does a lot for you. And if that seems like too much to ask, even just one hour of exercise a week has been shown to work wonders as well.

Put down those doughnuts!... Keeping your blood sugar balanced will really help you steel yourself against the detrimental effects of stress. Eating balanced meals that include a good dose of protein from chicken, fish or red meat will increase energy and lower anxiety.

Credible Sources

I was contacted by Brooke Stull of Limited Brands, regrading a current blog entry on animal testing. She informed me that Limited Brands does not test on animals any of their personal care products, nor does it request any of their third party manufacturers to do so. Also, Limited Brand does not use any animal byproducts in their formulations.

When writing your blog entries make sure your sources are valid and up to date. Just because they are on a magazine or on a website does not automatically make them useful for a paper or project. Always check for the authors credentials and where did the author get the information. These tips will be helpful when writing future blog entries.

I re-iterate my apology to Limited Brands.
